Two Bearded I.T. Guys + a mixologist (you in?)

Hey Reader,

One thing I’ve learned the hard way: you don’t level up in this field by grinding alone in your office at 11pm. You level up faster when you’ve got people around you who get it. That’s why I’m excited about what we’ve got coming up, it’s part fun, part career growth, and all about getting you moving again.

Hey guys! Thrilled to be partnering with Rippling IT on a really cool virtual event we’ve got coming up in a few weeks.

We’re calling it Cocktails & Career Advice with Two Bearded I.T. Guys, and we’ll be having a ton of fun with a professional mixologist walking us through a mini cocktail-making class, live on Zoom with all of you guys.

While we’re at it, we’re also going to be talking openly about how IT pros can advance their careers and continue to grow while dealing with all of the challenges we deal with in our line of work. Isolation, burnout, feeling stuck, and technology that’s changing all the time. We’ll cover all that and more.

So come join us on Tuesday, March 10th, 6p ET / 3p PT.

First 350 registrants will get a free cocktail kit sent straight to their home so they can follow along with the class, and we’ll also be raffling off an Xbox Series S for one lucky attendee.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, burned out, or just a little disconnected from tech lately… don’t overthink this one. Show up. Worst case, you learn how to make a great cocktail and hang out with good people. Best case, you leave with actual clarity on your next move.

This week’s reminder: being busy isn’t the same thing as building momentum.
If your time is full of tickets, tasks, and “keeping things running,” but you’re not building evidence of your skills (wins, small projects, documentation, measurable outcomes), you’ll feel stuck even while you’re working your tail off.

So this week, pick one thing you can do in the next 30 minutes that creates evidence:

  • Write up a short “problem → fix → impact” win from work
  • Build a tiny lab and document it (even a page is enough)
  • Update your resume with one measurable bullet
  • Post one helpful lesson learned on LinkedIn

Small actions. Real proof. That’s how careers move.

Tuesday, June 23, 2026 · 5 min read Hey Reader, (Listen to the podcast version here) Let’s talk about a trend that is quietly killing your odds of getting hired right now. They think they found a cheat code....

Last month, I got a message from a reader named Marcus. He'd been applying for help desk jobs for nine months. Forty-plus applications. Two interviews. Zero offers. Two weeks after we got on a call, he had three offers on the table. The starting salary on the one he took was 52K. Nothing about Marcus changed. No new certs. No...
